AN APPRAISAL OF INNOVATIONS IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ISLAMIC LAW IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

It is trite beyond any equivocation that the world has been digitalized through information and communication technology (ICT). As such, education has also gone digital. Thus lecturers and students are now driven on the precepts of modern way of educational information dissemination. In tandem with the above assertion, the modern instructional materials such as multimedia and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) needed for teaching and learning of Islamic law in many Nigerian universities are believed to be either unavailable or inadequate. In most cases, some of the Islamic law lecturers are not digitally inclined. Using doctrinal method of research, this paper appraises innovations in the teaching and learning of Islamic law in Nigerian Universities. The paper finds that inadequacy of teaching and learning methods plus current and up to date instructional materials affects learning and causes undue wastage of time, while application of modern and adequate methods enhances and influences students’ academic performance. The paper recommends that adequate and functional teaching and learning methods plus current and up to date instructional materials should be adopted and procured by Nigerian universities for effective and meaningful teaching and learning of Islamic law.
