An analysis of phonetic sonorities and vocal-pianistic intersections in Rimsky-Korsakov's Op. 2 romances

Nikita Mamedov

This study examines Rimsky-Korsakov's Op. 2 romances through a corpus-based phonetic-musicological analysis of stressed vowels and sonorities, also how the composer approaches Russianand German-authored Russian-translated poetry. The study adopts stochastic musicology to: (1) allocate compositional differences in Rimsky-Korsakov's tactics to musically depict the text; and (2) define the composer's choices as either (a) compositional nonconformity used to interpret the poetic meaning, or (b) stylistic deviations within the holistic view of the four works within Op. 2. Based on systematic detection of patterns in text-music relationships and the concurrent links between the musical settings and phonetic-structural features of each verse, the research ties the results to an explicitly Russian musical identity while addressing distinct analytical gaps that traditional theoretical and musicological approaches leave unresolved.
