An Analysis of Military and Higher Education Learning Environments

This chapter employs an asset-based approach to examine the learning environments within the US military and higher education systems, highlighting their similarities and differences to provide deeper insight into veterans’ transitions to civilian life. In addition to the distinct cultures of these settings, the chapter explores the organizational diversity within the military and its influence on training and educational experiences. It also assesses the historical and current potential for reciprocity between military and civilian learning environments, uncovering mutual benefits for both. Furthermore, the chapter investigates the support systems available to veterans during their transitions, focusing on the implications for both military and higher education institutions. The discussion emphasizes the critical need for collaboration between military and civilian education systems to enrich the learning experiences of veterans and other adult learners.
