An 18 th Dynasty Dog’s Name from Thebes

Chelsea Kaufman

Nearly 100 names of dogs are known from ancient Egypt. This short communication presents one previously undocumented dog’s name found in the tomb of the 18 th Dynasty noble User (TT 21) in the Theban cemetery of Sheikh ‘Abd el-Qurnah. An offering scene within the tomb features a dog with his name faintly visible above his head, seated beneath the tomb owner’s chair. The dog’s name is unique among the corpus of Egyptian cynonymes (dog names). A brief linguistic analysis of the name offers preliminary insights into its potential funerary significance.
