Ambient Nostalgia in Algorithmic Environments: A Mixed-Methods Study of Romanian Facebook

This study reconceptualizes nostalgia as an ambient moral–emotional orientation — a diffuse affective atmosphere that shapes interpretation in algorithmic environments. Rather than treating nostalgia as driving discrete thematic claims, we argue that it operates as a structurally embedded, ambient condition: circulating through warmth, moral reassurance, and implied loss, and normalized through repeated algorithmic exposure. Drawing on a mixed-methods analysis of 12,790 public Facebook posts from three Romanian pages identified through systematic algorithmic ecosystem mapping rather than keyword-based sampling, we combine inductive qualitative thematic analysis with a lexicon-based Warmth Index capturing affiliative, faith-based, and virtue-oriented language — allowing qualitative interpretation of nostalgic registers to be confirmed at corpus scale. The results show that explicit nostalgic claims account for just 0.56% of posts — not as a limitation, but as the central empirical finding: these pages produce nostalgic affect without naming it. Nostalgic meaning circulates instead through recurring moral–emotional registers including family and home, faith and divine order, moral values, and simplicity. The Warmth Index reveals a modest but consistent engagement association (ρ = .049, p < .001), stronger under likely inauthentic follower conditions (ρ = .190), suggesting structural compatibility between affective framing and engagement-oriented platform dynamics. By reconceptualizing nostalgia as ambient, this study contributes to research on digital emotions, digital influence and platform-mediated meaning-making in the Romanian algorithmic environment and offers a methodological explanation for why nostalgia-like claims may resist detection.
