Aligned, Action-Driven, and Evolving: Embedding ACCELERATE Assessment Principles in a Reorganized College Structure

Kristy L Byrd, Paul A Townend

The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) presents a case study illustrating how aspects of the ACCELERATE assessment framework strengthen meaningful continuous improvement. The university’s commitment to hiring experienced assessment professionals to work directly with college leadership as a team demonstrates how assessment can be “Energized by Expertise,” leveraging experience to provide direction for continuous improvement. The project highlights “Aligned Purposefully” practices by linking program goals, resources and trainings across CHSSA to academic program review. “Action-Driven” responses to assessment findings close the loop, prompting curricular refinements and targeted student supports aligned to College priorities. Finally, the initiative is “Enduring and Evolving,” developing patterns of support, resources and fostering a culture of collective ownership. This case study offers a model for institutions seeking assessment approaches that incorporate the best practices outlined in the ACCELERATE framework.
