Algorithmic decision-making: Reshaping the military profession
Milan MarkovicsThis article argues that artificial intelligence transforms military decision-making by reshaping the epistemic and moral conditions under which judgment is exercised. In contemporary military practice AI-enabled decision-support systems increasingly affect how information is filtered, ranked and acted upon in environments defined by uncertainty, time pressure and responsibility. The article first interprets the military profession as an epistemic profession grounded in disciplined judgment rather than technical efficiency alone. It then examines military judgment through the concept of practical wisdom and analyzes three distortions of the algorithmic decision environment: epistemic, cognitive-temporal and moral. The analysis shows how this structuring takes place through filtering, ranking, temporal compression and the redistribution of epistemic and moral responsibility. Consequently, the integration of artificial intelligence should not be interpreted as a neutral technological development, but rather as a development that redefines the standards of excellence, responsibility and agency within the military profession itself.
