Al-Ti intermetallic formation by cold spraying and friction stir processing
Zonghui Wang, Shuo Fu, Yaxin Xu, Wenya LiThis study proposes a method for the formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds. A dense Al/Ti alloy composite deposit with a porosity of less than 1% was first prepared by cold spraying. Friction stir processing was subsequently utilized to enhance interfacial diffusion and promote the formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds. The influence of rotational speed on the evolution of microstructure and the resulting mechanical properties was investigated. The results demonstrate that FSP promotes particle redistribution and facilitates the formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the samples is enhanced after FSP, but the elongation first increases and then decreases. With the rotational speed increase, the fracture mode of the deposit transitions from ductile to brittle. This work provides an efficient strategy for the solid-state formation of Al-Ti intermetallic compounds.
