Air pollution and climate change impact on respiratory health in Africa: Evidence and interventions

Aneesa Vanker, Joy Nkiru Eze, Babatunde Awokola, Seyram Michelline Wordui

Air pollution and climate change are global environmental health challenges impacting human respiratory health. In Africa, air pollution compounded by climate change is an important risk factor affecting respiratory health from early life and across the life course. While a lack of epidemiological data underestimates the burden of exposures and the resulting health implications, there is growing evidence that explores these interactions. In this narrative review, we aim to explore the interplay of air pollution and climate change on respiratory health, focusing on vulnerable African populations, with the purpose of spotlighting African studies and cohorts exploring these impacts. Furthermore, we review some of the interventions studied to address the negative impacts and additionally offer a way forward to address some of these issues.
