AI-Powered Emotion Detection to Increase Reading Comprehension Skills

Amanda L. Mazin

Abstract

Assistive technology is considered a supplemental support. Students have a wide range of learning styles and needs, and assistive technology can provide a means to increase the quality interactions with peers to develop independent skills to facilitate broader reading comprehension development. Teachers can navigate systems of support to provide necessary scaffolds to all learners, without AI replacing direct instruction or student work. In this framework chapter, AI-based assistive technology as an academic support for learners will be presented. Within this framework, AI is a supplemental support, often one of many for teachers used to reinforce student learning. Following the educational construct of Universal Design for Learning (CAST, 2024), AI can be used to enhance, modify, scaffold, and support all learners. AI can be used to modify the content, process, or products of learning.
