Agents of Change: Teamwork and Collaboration with AI at the Table
Lisa Endersby, Daniel M. Jenkins, Kirstin C. PhelpsThis chapter explores the transformative implications of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies as a “teammate” in leading virtual and hybrid teams. The growing prevalence of GenAI tools and the shift toward remote and hybrid work create a critical need to reexamine how leaders demonstrate essential leadership competencies in these environments. Framed by discussions on GenAI as both a collaborator and a tool, this chapter considers the ethical dilemmas, pedagogical innovations, and practical strategies for integrating GenAI into team leadership. Building on the authors’ previous work in exploring leadership competencies for leading at the virtual table, it investigates how GenAI reshapes trust, collaboration, and productivity in diverse teams while balancing human agency and technological capabilities. Through critical questions, a case study reflection, and practical takeaways, the chapter offers a roadmap for fostering GenAI literacy (LeaderAIcy), managing ethical and technical considerations, and leveraging GenAI for meaningful leadership and teamwork in global, hybrid contexts.
