Affect Bridge: A Therapeutic Technique for Trauma Processing
Heather Spiegel, Stephen SouthernThe Affect Bridge technique borrowed from ego state therapy is related to techniques in contemporary models such as emotion-focused therapy, internal family systems therapy, and Schema therapy. Affect Bridge uses vivid imagery and somatic cues to access emotions that cannot be recalled or expressed. The technique facilitates exposure to avoided experiences and transformation of perceptions, feelings, cognitions, and behaviors associated with adverse or traumatic events. The intervention is not a stand-alone treatment. Instead, Affect Bridge fits a transtheoretical approach to trauma access, processing, and resolution. Functions of the technique and instructions for implementation are described. A clinical case study illustrates the application of Affect Bridge. The technique is described in the contexts of treatment planning and the therapeutic relationship.
