Advances in Deep‐Sea Geohazards: Mechanisms, Impacts and Future Perspectives

ABSTRACT

Deep‐sea geohazards encompass diverse destructive geological phenomena driven by complex natural and anthropogenic factors. Recent research on these events has transitioned from qualitative descriptions to more rigorous quantitative analyses. This comprehensive review examines the latest scientific advancements in understanding major deep‐sea geohazards, specifically focusing on traction‐driven bottom currents, turbidity currents, submarine landslides and shallow gas accumulations. We synthesise current research findings, highlight their significant impacts on the stability of offshore engineering installations, and identify critical unresolved challenges within this discipline. Future advancements in marine geohazard prediction and mitigation will heavily rely on establishing high‐precision, long‐term in situ observation networks coupled with artificial intelligence. Ultimately, this study aims to provide a robust theoretical framework and reference for ongoing deep‐water exploration, engineering safety and geological risk mitigation.
