Abstract

This manuscript presents a comprehensive overview of copper-based materials aimed at engineering applications. Firstly, physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of copper and copper alloys are outlined. The tradeoff between such properties is discussed and the importance of optimizing the design and processing of Cu-based materials for specific engineering applications highlights the role of advanced processing methods and characterization techniques. The work then reviews recent developments in non-equilibrium processing and synthesis methods that have shown significant improvements regarding the possibility of widening the application of Cu in several industrial fields. Additionally, an exploration of the impact of these advancements on various applications, such as electronics, tools, friction, and the biomedical industry is presented. In conclusion, this review provides an outlook on the future of copper-based materials for engineering applications, emphasizing the need for continued research and development to address emerging challenges and opportunities.
