Adiabatic separation of the outer and inner electrons and the band structure of inert gas crystals

A. M. Ratner

A qualitative difference in the conditions in which a weakly bound outer electron and strongly bound inner electrons of an atom move, is characteristic for inert gas crystals. This makes the utilization of traditional band theory methods difficult, but permits substantial simplification of the problem by separating the outer and inner electrons in an adiabatic approximation. In addition to the conduction band considered earlier, the excitation bands are constructed by such means.
