Addressing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Perioperative Settings: An Evidence-Based Approach to Improve Outcomes

Emily Robertson, Greta Mitzova-Vladinov

Purpose:

To increase posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) awareness and anesthetic implications among certified nurse anesthetists in a large academic affiliated health care facility.

Method:

The project introduced a PTSD screening tool, online educational modules, 13-question Likert-type pre- and post-surveys, and an evidence-based PTSD fact sheet.

Results:

Participants demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge regarding PTSD awareness. Nonpharmacological interventions were found to be useful >90% of the time. Easy implementation was the most common reason for their selection.

Conclusion:

This project highlighted the need for continuous research and systematic efforts to optimize care for patients with PTSD, emphasizing the importance of ongoing collaboration across disciplines.
