This case study examines how “Databits,” a technology startup, leveraged absorptive capacity (AC) to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. AC—the ability to recognize, assimilate, and apply new knowledge—is essential for firms in fast-changing environments. Focusing on Databits’ pivot from a business-to-business (B2B) model to a business-to-customer (B2C) approach, this chapter highlights AC’s role in enabling adaptation, innovation, and growth. The analysis begins with an overview of AC’s importance in fostering innovation and responding to market shifts, followed by the challenges faced by startups in the information technology sector and the role of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in supporting their development. Drawing on interviews with Databits’ leadership, it traces the company’s path from its inception in Ecuador to its expansion into new markets. During the pandemic, Databits swiftly transitioned to a B2C model to address emerging opportunities, later reverting to its original B2B focus. This shift illustrates the interplay between potential and realized AC—recognizing opportunities, absorbing new knowledge, and reconfiguring the business model. The case also examines Databits’ internationalization strategy, including securing venture capital and expanding across Latin America. Databits’ experience offers broader lessons for the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem: Strategic adaptation and innovation, supported by AC, can help startups overcome challenges and seize opportunities. The company’s ability to learn, adjust, and apply insights underscores AC’s strategic value as a driver of innovation, competitive advantage, and long-term success in dynamic markets.
