Recognition of the characteristic morphologic features of acute promyelocytic leukemia on peripheral blood smear should prompt immediate initiation of all‐trans retinoic acid while awaiting confirmatory testing, as early intervention is critical to reducing hemorrhagic mortality and improving clinical outcomes.
