Acute Iron Ingestion—Gastrointestinal Decontamination via Gastroscopy Retrieval

ABSTRACT

Oral iron poisoning exceeding 60 mg/kg can be associated with life-threatening toxicity, ranging from gastrointestinal damage to severe liver and cardiovascular injury. Whole bowel irrigation is the preferred method of gastrointestinal decontamination. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman successfully managed with gastroscopy retrieval—an approach rarely seen in the literature. This case highlights gastroscopy as a viable alternative for gastrointestinal decontamination, especially if evidence of retained radiopaque content within the stomach.
