Abstract

Background:

Digital acquisition of dental casts is essential for diagnosis and treatment planning; however, the accuracy of different imaging modalities requires further evaluation.

Objective:

To evaluate the accuracy of CBCT and IOS in digitizing dental plaster casts using a DS as reference.

Methods:

Twenty dental plaster casts were scanned using CBCT, IOS, and a DS. CBCT data were segmented and converted from DICOM to STL format. Trueness was evaluated by comparison with reference scans, and precision by intramodality comparison. 3D surface analysis was performed to calculate RMSE. Statistical analysis was performed at P ≤ 0.05.

Results:

The IOS demonstrated significantly higher trueness than CBCT (mean RMSE = 69.48 ± 13.26 µm vs. 642.24 ± 88.17 µm; P < 0.001). No significant difference was observed in precision between the two modalities ( P > 0.05). Inter-rater reliability was excellent for both trueness and precision (CCC = 0.99).

Conclusion:

IOS demonstrated superior trueness, while CBCT and IOS showed comparable precision. IOS remains the preferred method for high-fidelity applications such as precise prosthetics, while CBCT suits diagnostic and follow-up purposes where absolute trueness is secondary.
