Access to Support Services for Black Survivors of Homicide Victims

Kendall Morris

Homicide continues to be a pressing issue in the United States. Black individuals also continue to be disproportionately represented in the number of homicide victims. This study used qualitative data obtained from semi-structured interviews of family and friends of Black homicide victims from Boston, MA and Detroit, MI, to assess, and determine better ways to meet the needs of surviving family and friends post homicide through support services. The study results show the lack of culturally relevant support and the need for development of new and expansion of current support. The article concludes with recommendations for training and resources, with specific attention to legal, law enforcement, medical, and behavioral health providers.
