A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing: Laryngeal Myxoma Masquerading as a Vocal Cord Polyp

Abstract

Myxoma is a rare benign tumor of mesenchymal origin and is very rarely seen in the larynx. Because of its appearance, it is often mistaken for a vocal cord polyp. We report the case of a 19-year-old female who presented with hoarseness of voice for 1 month. Laryngoscopic examination showed a small polypoidal lesion on the vocal cord. The lesion was surgically removed. Histopathological examination showed sparse spindle-shaped cells in abundant myxoid stroma without atypia or mitotic activity, confirming the diagnosis of myxoma. Complete excision was curative. This case highlights the importance of histopathological examination in the diagnosis of rare laryngeal lesions.
