A transdisciplinary take on community-participatory HIV modeling

In 2025, an estimated 1.2 million people acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), most of whom live in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, with disproportionately high risks among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). Social and healthcare stigma and discrimination, structural violence, and criminalization of same-sex practices continue to widen gaps in HIV prevention and treatment among GBM. Decisions on how to respond to the HIV epidemic at the global and national levels are directly guided by mathematical models. Here, a group of experts guides us through a transdisciplinary approach to community participatory HIV modeling.
