A Thirty-Year Bibliometric Assessment of Restoring Ecosystems Through Ecological Governance

This study integrates intellectual, conceptual, and collaborative frameworks that developed ecological governance for ecosystem restoration from 1995 to 2025. It contrasts command-and-control conservation with participatory, flexible, multi-level governance. Research on key academic contributions, institutional links, and developing thematic goals shows that governance-driven restoration rhetoric is socio-political and ecological. This synthesis helps create socio-ecological resilience frameworks and explains governance system motivations, difficulties, and opportunities. The study examines 379 Scopus-indexed papers spanning 1995–2005 (13), 2005–2015 (37), and 2015–2025 (329). A hybrid bibliometric method combines qualitative scientific mapping and quantitative performance analysis using R Bibliometric and VOS Viewer. Publishing patterns, author production, journal impact, co-authorship, co-citation, and keyword co-occurrence networks reveal the discipline’s intellectual, conceptual, and social foundations. Early studies concentrated on regulatory frameworks and conservation governance; subsequent studies emphasized multi-stakeholder engagement, decentralized decision-making, and socio-ecological resilience. In the final step, ecology, political science, and development studies collaborated to create adaptive and regenerative governance models. These models involve ecological knowledge, policy improvement, and community governance. Governance fragmentation has become a global, cross-regional ecological restoration. This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric evaluation of theoretical, methodological, and collaborative changes over the past three decades to help researchers, policymakers, and practitioners create inclusive and resilient governance frameworks to address future environmental and social issues.
