Abstract

Introduction:

Double-J (DJ) stents cause stent-related symptoms in approximately 80% of patients. Many pharmacological agents are being evaluated either alone or in combination for the management of these symptoms. This study evaluated the role of tadalafil and mirabegron in the management of DJ stent-related symptoms.

Materials and Methods:

In this study, patients with unilateral DJ stents having stent-related symptoms on the 7 th postoperative day (POD) were randomized into three groups: mirabegron (Group 1), tadalafil (Group 2), and control (Group 3). Using the Hindi version of the Ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire, these symptoms were evaluated on the 14 th and 21 st PODs. Statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS version 20.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).

Results:

On POD 14, urinary symptoms, body pain, general health, other matters, global quality, and sexual matters score of Group 1 were 20.80 ± 1.41, 13.56 ± 1.61, 15.20 ± 1.41, 5.94 ± 1.46, 2.98 ± 0.96, and 4.30 ± 0.65; Group 2 were 20.58 ± 0.88, 13.88 ± 0.87, 14.86 ± 0.78, 5.72 ± 0.54, 3.18 ± 0.72, and 4.04 ± 0.83; and Group 3 were 24.42 ± 1.54, 17.20 ± 1.59, 19.18 ± 1.21, 9.46 ± 1.27, 4.20 ± 0.61, and 5.12 ± 1.00, respectively. On POD 21, scores of Group 1 were 20.56 ± 1.51, 13.74 ± 1.89, 14.38 ± 1.59, 5.82 ± 1.19, 3.02 ± 0.91, and 4.18 ± 0.44; Group 2 were 20.50 ± 0.93, 13.84 ± 0.79, 14.72 ± 0.95, 5.68 ± 0.59, 3.26 ± 0.69, and 4.00 ± 0.86; and Group 3 were 24.94 ± 1.56, 16.66 ± 2.02, 19.50 ± 1.42, 9.62 ± 1.16, 4.30 ± 0.54, and 5.28 ± 0.97, respectively. The P value is statistically insignificant between Groups 1 and 2. However, the P value is statistically significant between Groups 1 and 3 as well as between Groups 2 and 3.

Conclusion:

Both mirabegron and tadalafil are effective and feasible treatment options for stent-related symptoms.
