A Simplified Overview of the Mustard Atrial Switch Operation – Refining the Surgical Technique
Vijayakumar Raju, Christopher W. BairdThe Mustard atrial switch procedure has been well documented since the 1960s and is generally considered easier to perform than the Senning procedure. In the current era, the atrial switch operation is primarily indicated as part of the anatomic correction of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries or for children with D-Transposition of the great arteries and an intact ventricular septum who present late with a regressed left ventricle, especially in developing regions. There is a scarcity of literature detailing the specific operative steps of the Mustard atrial switch operation. In this article, we present our surgical technique in a clear, step-by-step format, to facilitate understanding and encourage broader adoption within the paediatric cardiac surgical community.
