A simple metal-hydride system is described for the rapid hydrodehalogenation of aromatic halides using sodium borohydride in combination with supported-metal catalysts. Carbon-supported palladium and rhodium catalysts are compared for efficiency in hydrodehalogenating simple aromatic iodides, bromides, chlorides, and fluorides. This system is notable for its use of off-the-shelf reagents and the extremely rapid nature of the transformation.
