A secondary dependency of the mass-metallicity relation on the metallicity gradients

We summarize results from studies of the mass-metallicity relation and the metallicity gradients. We analyse the origin of the variation of the metallicity distributions, i.e. the level of enrichment and the metallicity gradients, within a cosmological context. The action of different physical processes in shaping the metallicity distributions are highlighted.
