A review of studies related to Fluoride levels in ground water all over India, specifically in UP and its harmful effects

Meenakshi Saini, Shubha Dwivedi

In present scenario this has been seen that excess fluoride is being found in almost all the resources of ground water. Fluoride in concentrations up to 1 mg/L is good for our bone and teeth, but if its concentration increases more than this required limit then it can be harmful for us, as it causes skeletal and dental fluorosis and other harmful effects all over body. Fluoride concentration of upto 10mg/L or more has been found in samples collected from ground water. So there is need of technologies for the excess fluoride removal from drinking water but a large part of population consumes unfiltered ground water daily which is the reason for prevalence of various health related problems in them. According to data of NPPCF (upto 2020) 15% cases are of dental fluorosis and 5% skeletal fluorosis cases have been found in community of different states of India and almost 23% cases of dental fluorosis in schools of different states of India has been found. Bioremoval of fluoride is being preferred now days due to its eco-friendly nature and some methods allow upto 98% removal of fluoride. Different types of fruit peels, tree barks and roots are being used for this. We have covered status of fluoride levels all over India especially in UP, its effects on human health and bioadsorbents which are being used now days for fluoride removal.
