A Reproduction of Torao Tago’s Diary of November-December 1943, with Bibliographical Notes

Tsukasa IZUMI

This paper is comprised of the reproduction of four months of Torao Tago’s diary, which in total covers the six years from 1940 to 1945. Tago became famous after his play won second place in a creative writing contest sponsored by the magazine “KAIZO” in 1931. This period is covered in the diary, from November to Desember 1943.</br>During this period, Tago recorded in his diary the circumstances of his resignation from 日本移動演劇聯盟(Nippon Ido Engeki Renmei:the Japan Mobile Theater League), driven by internal factional disputes and family problems. The entries reveal his conflicting emotions:he considered resigning to secure writing time, yet simultaneously expressed regret and a desire to have stayed in the League. Overall, the text conveys that his employment at the League made 1943 a year of profound disruption, bringing chaos to both his activities as a writer and his domestic life.
