A Quiet Turning to the Language of Neighbours: Relational Sociolinguistics as Ethical Encounter

ABSTRACT

This commentary foregrounds a sociolinguistic research agenda that seeks to generate ethical forms of political co‐existence in places of inhospitality. I adopt the lens of relational ethics that centres attending to those in our presence, our neighbours, without ambition of mastery. The politics of ethics seen through this lens confronts sociolinguistics with a paradox: What does an ethical demand to refrain from determining others mean in the face of pervasive orders of indexicality that condition how those in the margins of political existence are (not) heard? How, if not through masterful exposé, can sociolinguistics hope for, let alone work towards re‐ordering the political arena of marginality, inhospitality and stigma? I propose relational sociolinguistics as a ‘quiet’ intervention that prioritises ethical encounters over theoretical, methodological or representational mastery. Relational sociolinguistics does not merely comment on (the absence or presence of) ethical encounters but risks itself by actively participating in them. The contribution charts the possible consequences for sociolinguistic praxis.

Tento komentár dáva do popredia agendu sociolingvistického výskumu, ktorej cieľom je generovanie etických foriem politickej coexistencie na miestach poznačených nepohostinnosťou. Na problém nazerám cez optiku relačnej etiky, ktorá dáva do centra pozornosť k tým, ktorí sú v našej blízkosti, t.j. k našim blížnym, bez ambície ich uchopiť či zvládnuť. Takto poňatá politika etiky konfrontuje sociolingvistiku s paradoxom. Čo znamená etická požiadavka zdržať sa determinácie druhých v kontexte všadeprítomného poriadku indexikality, ktorý podmieňuje, ako tí, ktorí sa ocitajú na okraji politickej existencie, (nie) sú počutí? Ako, ak nie cez bravúrne zvládnuté nasvietenie, môže sociolingvistika dúfať v zmenu politického poriadku marginalizácie, nepohostinnosti a stigmy, či sa o ňu dokonca priamo pričiniť? Ponúkam relačnú sociolingvistiku ako ‚tichú‘ intervenciu, ktorá dáva prednosť etickým stretnutiam pred dokonalým ovládnutím zaužívaých teórií, metodológií či postupov reprezentácie sociolingvistických dát. Relačná sociolingvistika totiž nielen podáva komentár o etických stretnutiach (ich prítomnosti či absencii), ale riskuje sama seba tým, že sa na nich aktívne podieľa. Príspevok načrtáva konzekvencie pre sociolinguistickú prax.
