A Preliminary Study of Speech-Language Pathologist and Parent Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence Use for Speech Sound Disorder Treatment

Purpose:

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications may expand the available intervention options for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). The purpose of this study was to understand the needs and preferences of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and parents of children with SSDs regarding AI-assisted interventions that can provide real-time feedback on children's speech production.

Method:

Twenty-two SLPs and 19 parents of children with SSDs took part in individual, virtual semistructured interviews to understand their current use of digital tools, the challenges in delivering or receiving effective therapy, and how AI-assisted interventions could enhance speech sound practice. Transcripts were coded for key words. Inductive thematic analysis was used to generate themes from codes separately for the two participant cohorts.

Results:

For SLPs, seven themes emerged: SLPs versus AI: roles and concerns; home practice and parent involvement; AI as a therapeutic support tool; speech and articulation complexity; AI as a motivation and efficiency tool; financial and institutional constraints; and time and caseload management. For parents, the following five themes emerged: practical realities and limitations of home-based speech practice; therapy access and systemic limitations; optimism about AI's role in speech therapy; engagement and motivation are critical for successful AI tools; and concerns about AI accuracy, oversight, and privacy.

Conclusions:

Parents and SLPs both express optimism and caution about the possible use of AI in therapy for SSDs. The perspectives of each of these parties should be considered in the development of AI-assisted treatments.
