A Perspective on Five‐Generation High‐Energy‐Density LiFePO 4 Cathodes and Beyond: From Materials to Manufacturing
Xia Huang, John Worsley, Thushan Pathirana, Xincheng Yang, Xiyue Peng, Bin Luo, Lianzhou Wang, Xiaobo ZhuABSTRACT
LiFePO 4 (LFP) has become a major cathode chemistry for lithium‐ion batteries because it offers safety, long cycle life, low cost, and abundant constituent elements. Further improvement in practical energy density depends on dense, high‐loading electrodes that retain electrolyte access, ionic transport, electronic continuity, mechanical integrity, and active‐material utilization. This perspective examines high‐density LFP from precursor selection and particle synthesis to electrode compaction and manufacturing. Particular attention is given to carbon efficiency, defect and growth control, particle morphology, size grading, conductive networks, pore transport, and dry processing. The final section outlines key priorities for future research and practical translation.
