A Novel Technique of Noninvasive Ventilation (Soong’s Ventilation): Pharyngeal Oxygen with Nose–Closure and Abdominal–Compression
Wen-Jue SoongAbstract
Soong’s ventilation (SV) is a simple, novel, and noninvasive ventilation technique. It could provide patients with effective oxygenation, ventilation, and partial circulation. SV comprises three main components: continuous pharyngeal oxygen insufflation, with optional and intermittent maneuvers of nose–closure, and/or abdominal–compression, which could generate controllable positive airway pressure, improve oxygenation, and facilitate both inspiration and expiration. Particularly, SV could achieve sufficient airway pressures to overcome airway resistance and expand the lumen, even in cases of airway narrowing or apneic status, while minimizing the need for more complicated and invasive respiratory supporting strategies. This SV technique enables simultaneous maintenance of cardiorespiratory stability as well as preservation of a clear vision of flexible bronchoscopy, thereby enhancing both diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Its simplicity, effectiveness, and adaptability may make it a valuable adjunct and alternative in pediatric cardiopulmonary support, airway management, and resuscitation settings. Overall, SV could offer an effective respiratory support that promotes patient safety and clinical procedural success.
