A New Wireless Charging Paradigm for Electric Vehicles: Driver Perceptions from a Real-World Trial on an Active Taxi Rank
Arun Ulahannan, Richard Sander, Stewart BirrellThis paper reports on the UK’s first public trial of wireless power transfer (WPT) for electric taxis at a live taxi rank in Nottingham, UK. Across a four-month testing period, 18 professional drivers individually spent four weeks using WPT-enabled vehicles, generating 72 semi-structured interviews analysed thematically. Findings highlight that, despite early technical challenges, drivers perceived significant benefits in convenience, time savings and improved charging access. Crucially, adoption depended on a behavioural shift towards frequent ‘top-up’ charging, with WPT considered too slow when used as a substitute for rapid cable charging. The study also reveals the importance of pad placement in taxi ranks, reliable in-vehicle alignment interfaces, and billing flexibility. By situating WPT within drivers’ existing work patterns, the trial demonstrates the potential of this technology to support the electrification of high-mileage fleets. The results provide actionable guidance for policymakers, city authorities, and technology providers seeking to accelerate the Net-Zero transition of urban taxi services.
