Chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis (CRAS) is one of the most common diseases of the oral mucosa. The aim of this study is to analyze the main modern concepts and approaches to the treatment of chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Materials and methods. The study was conducted by searching and reviewing original articles on the etiology and treatment of chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis in the PubMed, eLibrary, Google Scholar, and Cyberleninka databases. Materials were selected using keywords. Results. This literature review presents current understanding of the etiology and various treatment methods for chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The literature review demonstrated that topical corticosteroids, antibacterial agents, and laser therapy have the greatest weight of evidence in the treatment of chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis. For hyaluronic acid, vitamin-mineral supplements, and a number of other non-drug treatments, the studies reviewed demonstrated less pronounced positive effects, and the reliability of the data obtained was moderate due to the heterogeneity of the studies. Conclusions. The literature reviewed indicates the absence of a definitive etiologic factor in the development of chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis. For this reason, treatment for chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis relies primarily on symptomatic management, which involves eliminating predisposing factors and topical therapy. The most studied medications for the treatment of chronic recurrent aphthous stomatitis are topical corticosteroids and low-level laser therapy, which have a more pronounced analgesic and regenerative effect than other medications. However, the lack of uniform treatment protocols necessitates further clinical trials.
