A Minority yet not a Minority: Lived Experience of East Asian Planning Doctorates in the Academic Environment

We examined systemic barriers faced by East Asians with doctoral degrees, an important group that constitutes a large share, and often the majority, of doctoral students in the fields of planning and public administration at US universities. Based on a stratified sample of twenty-five interviews, we found that, while our interviewees enjoyed a relatively liberal environment during doctoral training, they experienced a more subtle exclusionary experience in their postdoctoral careers related to their capabilities and recognition. Asian doctorates felt that they were invisible as a minority, and Asian women expressed more barriers.
