A Meta‐Analysis of Self–Other Differences in Prejudice
Sofia Narciso, Cristina Mendonça, André MataABSTRACT
In this meta‐analysis, we assessed self–other differences in prejudice: the extent to which people think that other people harbour more negative attitudes (or more stereotypical beliefs) about members of certain social groups than they themselves do. We found an average medium‐to‐large effect, d = 0.71, and evidence supporting dual‐process accounts. However, we also found extreme heterogeneity. Some moderators modulate the effect (e.g., the self–other asymmetry is larger for judgements related to race/ethnicity and sexual orientation), but the heterogeneity remained high even when considering these moderators, suggesting that further research is needed to make sense of these self–other asymmetries.
