A Low-Cost STM32 Based Motor Drive for Field Oriented Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

Hüseyin Cemre Yılmaz, Esra Kandemir Beşer
For various areas of the industry and especially for electric vehicles, permanent magnet synchronous motors have qualified features compared to many motors. When the need for speed control and position control arises, these machines are mostly controlled with field-oriented control (FOC). Generally, in FOC applications, DSP-based microcontrollers with high processing capacity but also high cost are preferred. This paper proposes a low-cost STM32 microcontroller based permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive for the application of FOC as an alternative to expensive motor drives. STM32F303K8T6 microcontroller was preferred in the control unit of the motor drive since it has many benefits. Considering the principles of FOC, the corresponding hardware and software designs were realized for FOC application of PMSM. Motor drive was manufactured for an existing PMSM, a software was built for FOC method and experimental studies were carried out. Through experimental studies, the responses of the PMSM drive system to the reference values were measured in the case of speed and current control. The proposed motor drive achieved good dynamic performance in the FOC application. It constitutes an important cheaper alternative to motor drives containing expensive microcontrollers.
