A Healing Through Light: A Prospective Study About Laser Haemorrhoidoplasty

Objectives:

Haemorrhoids are vascular structures in the anal canal that may become swollen or inflamed, leading to symptoms such as bleeding, pain, itching, and prolapse. These symptoms can significantly affect the quality of life. While conservative and operative treatments exist, diode laser haemorrhoidoplasty has emerged as a minimally invasive and effective alternative. To evaluate the efficacy of diode laser therapy in patients with symptomatic haemorrhoids.

Material and Methods:

A prospective, hospital-based study was conducted at K.S. Hospital between November 2023 and November 2024 on 20 patients aged over 18 years with Grade II–IV haemorrhoids, classified according to Goligher’s classification. Patients with fistulas or acutely inflamed thrombosed haemorrhoids were excluded. Procedures were performed under spinal anaesthesia using a 1470 nm Lasotronix diode laser. Laser energy was delivered to the haemorrhoidal pedicle (60 J) and intersphincteric plane in a controlled manner. Postoperative care included analgesics, prophylactic antibiotics, laxatives, and sitz baths. Follow-up was conducted weekly for one month and then via telephone for up to one year.

Results:

Among the 20 patients (mean age 39 years; 9 males, 11 females), the most common symptoms were constipation (100%), bleeding per rectum (85%), and prolapse (71.4%). Eleven underwent mucopexy with laser, while nine had laser alone. Two patients experienced transient pain and bleeding. No recurrences were reported.

Conclusion:

Diode laser haemorrhoidoplasty is a safe, minimally invasive treatment with promising short-term outcomes, minimal complications, and no recurrence observed during the follow-up period.
