A Group of Agricultural Tools from the Sivas Archaeology Museum Collection

Ali Özcan, Ali Alkan
The subject of this article consists of 5 sickles belonging to the collection of Sivas Archaeology Museum. Sickles are metal agricultural tools consisting of a curved cutting part and neck sections deliberately prepared for the attachment of a handle. The findspots of the 5 sickles are unknown. The sickles were brought to the museum in 2022. The 5 sickles were dated by the analogy method through the examination of published artifacts, primarily artifacts whose in situ positions are known and which were recovered as a result of previous archaeological studies. It has been understood that the artifacts were produced in the Middle and Late Bronze Age. In the study, the Bronze Age sickles that have been recovered up to the present day and whose scientific publication has been made were classified according to their types. Hittite cuneiform script, Anatolian hieroglyphs and various symbols are found on some sickles recovered. Evaluations were made regarding the areas of use of the sickles by taking into consideration the inscriptions and marks found on the sickles. It was observed that the artifacts with catalogue numbers 1-5, whose scientific publication was made, bear similar characteristics to the artifacts recovered at Hittite archaeological sites. According to Hittite cuneiform texts, sickles are objects used in rituals apart from being agricultural tools. With this study, it is aimed to contribute to the scientific literature by examining and publishing 5 artifacts and by providing information about the characteristics of the sickles of the Hittite Kingdom Period.
