A Double-Layer Loop-Free Hyperbolic Cable Structure: Concept and Analysis

Renjie Liu, Junjie Fang, Xiaoling Chen, Suduo Xue

The double-layer loop-free hyperbolic cable structure is a novel structural system derived from the spoke-type cable structures. This study first introduces the concept and components of the double-layer loop-free hyperbolic cable structure. Then, by comparing the optimized double-layer loop-free hyperbolic cable structure with the single-layer loop-free hyperbolic cable structure and the spoke-type single-layer cable structure, the economic indicators, overall stiffness, and progressive collapse resistance of the three schemes are evaluated. The research results demonstrate that the double-layer loop-free hyperbolic cable structure requires only 221 metric tons of cables, significantly less than the 395 metric tons of the single-layer loop-free scheme and the 641 metric tons of the spoke-type single-layer scheme. It also outperforms the other schemes in terms of clamp consumption, material usage, and construction costs, exhibiting higher economic efficiency. The structure exhibits greater overall stiffness and superior load-bearing capacity. The cable forces are uniformly distributed and satisfy the stress ratio limits, while all struts remain in compression. After cable rupture, the structure maintains shape stability with minimal changes in cable forces, demonstrating excellent progressive collapse resistance. These findings highlight the advantages of this novel structural system and validate its feasibility for practical engineering applications.
