A Dialogical Adventure in Foreign Language Education: ABCs of Cultural Understanding and Communication

Abstract

The debates on educational responses to globalization and immigration are significant and timely, addressing critical challenges faced by diverse societies in an increasingly globalized world. These discussions explore how education systems can adapt to shifting demographics, cultural integration, and the demands of a globalized economy. This chapter investigates the effectiveness of a pedagogical approach called the ABCs of Cultural Understanding and Communication in fostering intercultural awareness among foreign language learners. The chapter examines the ABCs approach, which utilizes autobiographies, biographies, and cross-cultural analysis to encourage learners to reflect on their own lives and develop empathy for others. The author conducted a case study involving Irish and German students learning each other’s languages through an online platform, analyzing how the ABCs approach influenced their perceptions of themselves and others. The research found that the ABCs approach can be effective in promoting cultural awareness, challenging stereotypes, and enhancing communication skills within a cross-cultural exchange, ultimately contributing to the development of global citizenship in students. This chapter is based on a doctoral dissertation. Notably, in 2017 Mary Masterton developed a holistic intercultural communication competence approach out of this study, expanding its implications for fostering empathy, understanding, and collaboration in diverse settings. Through structured activities and reflective practices, learners gained the ability to critically examine the role of culture in shaping thought processes and behaviors. This introspection and engagement with diverse perspectives fostered a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity, promoting empathy and intercultural understanding among participants. The study emphasizes the transformative power of guided reflection and dialog in breaking down cultural barriers and enhancing collaborative relationships in global contexts.
