A Deluxe Horoscope for 321 CE and the Paranatellontes

Michael Zellmann-Rohrer

First edition of a Greek horoscope on papyrus from Egypt, probably from the vicinity of Hermopolis, now kept in Giessen (P.Giss. 1). A date in 321 CE is reconstructed, and the papyrus is classed among the “deluxe” horoscopes, which provide additional information relevant to astrological interpretation. The basic data for planetary positions are lost; the most substantial remains are fixed stars “rising with” each planet, the paranatellontes , so far rare in original horoscopes. The description of these stars is based on the Handy Tables of Claudius Ptolemy, for which the papyrus attests an astrological reception already within two centuries of publication.
