Abstract

Background:

“According to Ayurveda, an individual can be classified into any one of the three types of the Manas Prakriti depending on the dominance of one or more of the three Gunas (Sat tva, Rajas, and Tamas ).” Manas Prakriti is the representative of a person’s mental constitution made of a unique ratio of three Gunas in the mind: Sattva (clarity, wisdom, and balance), Rajas (energy, passion, and movement), and Tamas (inertia, laziness, and stagnation). In recent years, many efforts have been made to establish a relationship of Manas Prakriti with either personality, temperament, stress, anxiety, or intelligence quotient.

Aim and Objective:

The objective of the present study was to explore the association between emotional quotient (EQ) and Manas Prakriti of young healthy volunteers.

Materials and Methods:

A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 30 apparently healthy volunteers ( Sattvika , Rajasika , and Tamasika – ten volunteers in each group) of both genders belonging to the age group 20–35 years after obtaining written informed consent. The Prakriti of these volunteers, followed by EQ, was assessed on the basis of a validated questionnaire by the interview method.

Results:

The results suggest that the higher Sattva is positively and significantly associated with EQ ( P = 0.004), while there is a tendency for higher Tamas to be linked with lower EQ, but the evidence is not strong enough ( P = 0.128).

Conclusion:

The present study suggests that Manas Prakriti traits, particularly Sattvika Prakriti , significantly predict EQ in the studied population.
