A Critical Reflection on the State of DEI

Abstract

This critical reflection examines the modern landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work and points to potential missteps by practitioners in the field that have led to widespread misunderstanding and reduced support for it. Specifically, it considers WHAT the goal of DEI initiatives should be and proposes that the attention given to gender, race, and sexuality have unintentionally caused other social categories to be excluded from the conversation, including more conservative ideologies. Additionally, it discusses HOW scientific approaches to social justice can increase their effectiveness beyond the emotional impact of personal narratives. Further, it makes a case that the WHO and FOR WHOM has at times come from untrained individuals looking to engage in more performative and profitable efforts that do not reach people in positions of power that can produce actual change. Lastly, it argues WHY it is still important to engage in DEI work, despite the resistance it currently and has historically always faced.
