A Convergent/Discriminant Validity Study of Scores on the Family Bondedness Scale

William Robert Nugent, Jong Kim

Purpose

The Family Bondedness Scale (FBS) is a measure of the degree to which a pet owner is emotionally attached to a pet in a manner commensurate with their emotional attachment to human family members. This study is the first to investigate the convergent and discriminant validity of FBS scores.

Method

The data came from 415 mostly older, homebound, rural pet owners obtained in a survey by Meals on Wheels America. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test a hypothesized convergent and discriminant validity measurement model, with specific criteria assessing convergent and discriminant validity.

Results

The hypothesized measurement model fit the data closely, and the results of specific tests were consistent with criteria for convergent and discriminant validity.

Discussion

Implications of these results for future research are discussed, along with implications for the use of the FBS in research and practice by professionals such as veterinarians and veterinary social workers.
