A Comparative Study on Teaching Self-Efficacy and Attitudes Toward the Teaching Profession of Faculty of Education and Pedagogical Training Students

This study aims to assess and compare the perceptions of self-efficacy and attitudes toward the teaching profession among students enrolled in a pedagogical training programme and senior students in a faculty of education, and to determine the potential relationship between these two variables. The research is a correlational study using a survey design. The sampling consists of faculty of education students and students in a teacher training programme at a state university in Türkiye. The relationships between the students’ attitudes toward the teaching profession and their perceptions of self-efficacy were examined using correlation analysis. Analyses were also conducted with respect to the variables of department and gender. An evaluation of the overall findings of the study revealed that participants’ levels of self-efficacy in teaching were somewhat high among faculty of education students and high among students in the teacher training programme, and that both groups had somewhat high average attitude scores. The scores of students in the teacher training programme were found to be significantly higher than those of faculty of education students for both variables. Furthermore, it was determined that self-efficacy and attitude scores did not differ according to gender or department. Finally, a moderate, positive correlation was found between the two variables. Based on these findings, it can be asserted that students enrolled in the teacher training programme have higher attitudes toward the teaching profession and higher perceptions of self-efficacy compared to students in the faculty of education. Taking into account the findings, measures should be taken to increase the self-efficacy perceptions of faculty of education students, particularly in field-specific courses, and prospective teachers should be inspired regarding the importance and contributions of teaching profession.
