A Comparative Analysis of the Social Studies Curricula of Türkiye and Singapore

The purpose of Social Studies curricula is to develop effective and responsible citizens. The program's initial implementation in the United States was driven by the objective of fostering a shared purpose among individuals from diverse religious affiliations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and socio-cultural histories, thereby facilitating harmonious coexistence. While this educational program is taught as a distinct discipline in countries like the USA, Türkiye and Singapore, it is incorporated within history, geography, or citizenship education in countries such as France, Germany, and the UK. This study provides a comparative analysis of the Social Studies programs in Türkiye and Singapore, focusing on the 2023 program in Türkiye and the 2020 program in Singapore. This research was conducted using qualitative methodology. The data was collected through a meticulous analysis of pertinent documents, and the findings were subsequently analyzed using descriptive analysis. The findings suggest that the educational program of Singapore encompasses a philosophy of education, complemented by seven skills and values that are integral to the curriculum. In contrast, the Turkish social studies curriculum lacks a clearly defined educational philosophy and instead provides general statements that outline the curriculum's perspective. The objectives of the Singaporean program are categorized under three main headings with 13 goals, whereas Türkiye’s program has 18 objectives. The Singaporean program delineates the philosophy of the course, its objectives, the recommended pedagogy, and assessment mechanisms. In contrast, the Turkish Social Studies program encompasses competencies, general values and skills, descriptions, and details such as general program objectives and perspectives. The Social Studies curricula of Singapore and Türkiye reflect their national priorities and cultural contexts. Türkiye focuses on national identity and historical awareness, while Singapore emphasizes multiculturalism and global citizenship. Both aim to foster critical thinking, problem-solving and responsibility, but their values and focus areas vary.
