A Century Later: Taxonomic Review of the Neotropical Genus
Hyptiocheta
Becker, 1922 (Diptera: Dolichopodidae), With Description of Three New Andean Species
Lucas Quevedo, Matheus M. M. Soares, Silvia Gutiérrez‐Bustamante, Carlos J. E. Lamas, Renato S. Capellari ABSTRACT
The previously monotypic Neotropical genus
Hyptiocheta
Becker, 1922 is reviewed.
Hyptiocheta convexa
Becker, 1922 is redescribed, and three new species are described and illustrated from South America:
H. archaeoptera
Quevedo, Soares & Lamas
sp. nov.
(Ecuador),
H. chuspi
Quevedo, Soares & Gutiérrez‐Bustamante
sp. nov.
(Peru) and
H. supay
Quevedo, Soares & Capellari
sp. nov.
(Ecuador). We provide high resolution photographs of external and internal morphology; the male and female terminalia are described for the first time, and an identification key for the males and an updated distribution map for the species are also provided. The phylogenetic position of the genus is discussed, along with the importance of Natural History Museum collections for biodiversity studies.
